In listeners we trust. Not just what they remember. What they do.
An online listener count moves constantly. People arrive and leave for reasons unrelated to the song on air: the hour, the day, a link shared elsewhere, an app closing in the background.
Most tune-outs are normal listener movement. Less than a quarter of tune-outs are associated with the song itself.
The system measures this background traffic and attempts to isolate the song's own signal.
The song is scored against the room it actually played in.
The system first adjusts for the station's normal audience movement at that time of day. After correction, the relationship with time of day drops to around zero in the stations tested.
The same correction accounts for neighboring songs. Without it, a song's reading can be pulled around by whatever happened to play immediately before or after it.
The useful question is not “how many listeners left?” It is “did more or fewer listeners leave than we would normally expect here?”
POP Score is not a count of listeners who tuned out during a song. It is an attempt to isolate the smaller, repeatable part of that movement associated with the song itself. That distinction is the foundation of everything that follows.
POP Score is updated after every play. Each song becomes a small ongoing music study as it airs across different dayparts and reaches different mixes of listeners. The correction above is what makes those plays comparable.
Without it, the same tune-out count could mean one thing at 7am and something else at 9pm.

Most songs live in the crowded middle of the scale. Less than 10% ever break out of it.
The middle is busy with constant, small movements, like the middle of a Top 40 chart: positions 15 to 35 trade places every week without meaning much. The top and the tune-outs tell the real story.
POP Score starts forming on the first plays and settles as airplay builds. Until it is steady enough to read, the score stays dimmed. That point comes sooner on some stations than others.
Scores develop fastest for songs receiving the most airplay, so the system learns quickest where rotation decisions matter most. Even while dimmed, the score band already points where the score is heading, and it is usually right.2
Hits take longer to confirm, but clear flops can appear much earlier: on The Big 80s from the first play, and on Dance UK by about the fourth. That is where POP Score is fastest: spotting a heavily rotated song that is holding the audience worse than expected.
Early movement is shown at band level. A song approaching Flop territory receives a badge, with a note and the evidence behind it.
Once a song reaches Hit territory, it tends to stay there, suggesting there may be room to increase rotation.3
Measurement runs continuously, keeping the full catalog ranked on current data as new songs build evidence and their scores settle.
